It’s official, folks. Today, Sony Mobile and Rogers launch the Xperia ion, a premium Android smartphone with key features like connectivity on the Rogers super fast LTE (Long Term Evolution) network, a big and beautiful 4.6-inch screen for watching stunning video content and many ways to share high-definition content with other devices – including your big-screen television.
The Sony Xperia ion is Sony’s first LTE smartphone in Canada to take advantage of Rogers’ next-generation wireless service, expected to cover about 60 percent of the Canadian population by the end of the year. Theoretical LTE download speeds currently top 75 Megabits per second, but will revert back to HSPA+ speeds in areas not yet supported for up to 21 Megabits per second downloads.
These blazing speeds will help while downloading large apps from Google Play (formerly Android Market) & browsing the web. Hook up with Wi-Fi and stream content from services such as Sony’s Video Unlimited – loaded with thousands of TV shows and Hollywood movies to rent. Along with the preloaded Video Unlimited app, Xperia ion owners will also find a Music Unlimited app to stream more than 15 million tracks.
The Sony Xperia ion ships with 16GB of internal memory and the option to add up to 32GB external (microSD) memory, plus you can sign up to access Box cloud storage (before December 31st) for 50GB of free cloud storage – for life.
The Android 2.3 (“Gingerbread”) device – which will be upgradable to Android platform 4.0 (“Ice Cream Sandwich”) – boasts a 1.5GHz dual-core processor and twin HD cameras (1080p rear-facing and 720p front-facing). The Exmor R rear camera also features a 12-megapixel sensor and works well in low-light environments, too.
